Formal call responsibilities are assigned during all rotations. In the CICU, overnight call will be assigned every fourth night. Home call will be assigned during all other rotations. Fellow work hours will be fully compliant with ACGME duty hour regulations.

Clinical training program

Our fellows participate in all aspects of clinical care for children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease.

Specific clinical rotations include:

  • Inpatient cardiac patient management on the wards and in the cardiac and neonatal intensive care units;
  • Inpatient cardiology consultations in all areas of Children's of Mississippi.
  • Outpatient cardiology, including general outpatient and outreach clinics, continuity clinic, and sub-specialty clinics, including transplant, electrophysiology, fetal and adult congenital clinics;
  • Echocardiography, with increasing exposure to advanced imaging including transesophageal echo, fetal echo, cardiac MRI;
  • Cardiac catheterization, diagnostic and interventional;
  • Electrophysiology, including interpretation of electrocardiograms, invasive EP studies, management of pacemakers and ICDs (exercise physiology also covered during this rotation);
  • Heart failure and transplant management, including patient support with ECMO and ventricular assist devices;
  • Cardiothoracic surgery observational experience.

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is allowed with the approval of the program director after the first year of training. By ACGME mandate, moonlighting hours must be reported and included in calculations of total work hours; the sum of fellowship program and moonlighting hours must not exceed 80 hours/week. Current fellows have opportunities to moonlight in the pediatric emergency room and the after hours clinic. This availability is based on pediatric emergency department needs
